Earth Friendly Entertainment
Okay, so this really is a stretch connecting what I'm about to say to the entertainment industry. (In fact, the only way that it really connects is because celebrities had a hand in designing what I'm talking about.) But I am such a big environmentalist that I had to post something about it. You cannot even begin to believe how proud/overjoyed/ecstatic I was to receive an email this morning saying that Sephora stores are now offering cosmetic products that not only are free of the harsh chemicals that every other soap/lipstick/hairspray contains, but a lot of the packaging is made of renewable corn-derived polymers that are recyclable too! After browsing their selection of items in an additional window, I found the best thing I have seen for sale in a long time. CARGO, a makeup brand I have been a fan of for several years, is now offering 5 different (and seemingly very flattering) shades of lipstick that 1) come in recyclable corn bio-plastic tubes (which, by the way, are greenhouse-gas neutral to create) and 2) are packaged in recycled flower paper boxes, which can be planted and will grow into wildflowers. In addition, two dollars from every lipstick sale is donated to CARGO's charity of choice, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I have a feeling that this is only the beginning, and am very proud of Sephora, CARGO, and the other beauty lines that are finally beginning to see a need for change and are starting to make a difference by using recyclable and non-animal derived ingredients. as little as i care about makeup and stuff...i'm stoked to hear that there is at least ONE company out there with some sort of environmental responsibility.
that's exciting. hopefully more companies will follow that lead.
and that wildflower thing!? crazy cool.
Even though I don't wear make-up, I think that this post is refreshing. It is always nice to hear that people are trying to save our enviroment (in any industry at that matter). Especially in the make-up industry where this is a high commodity to lots of women around the world.
One of my main aims as an artist is to find some way to better the world through my artistic practice, and I am always thrilled to see instances of the arts impacting the world in some positive way, whether it be environmental, social, political, or otherwise. Indeed, makeup is a part of our world as artists, since art and entertainment often overlap - so it's very satisfying to see the arts & entertainment world having a hand in promoting products that make the world just a bit better.
